MONTANA - State Population Estimates released December 27, 2007
July 1, 2007:   957,861    Rank 44th
According to newly released state population estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau, Montana's population increased by 11,066 between July 1, 2006 and July 1, 2007. Over 6,700 more people moved into the state than moved out. Between 2006 and 2007, Montana's growth rate of 1.2 percent ranked the state as the 17th fastest growing in the nation. Montana added 55,666 residents between April 1, 2000 and July 1, 2007, a 6.2 percent increase, ranking the state 20th in growth between these years.
Nevada returned to the top as the nation's fastest-growing state, with a population increase of 2.9 percent between July 1, 2006 and July 1, 2007. Arizona, fastest growing between 2005 and 2006, slipped to second place.      Populations change on a daily basis with births and deaths and by people moving in and out of an area. These components of population change are referred to as Natural Increases and Net Migration which includes either domestic (referred to as Internal) and International Migration.
This is the first in a series of population estimates that will be released on a flow basis through spring and summer 2008. In addition to states, estimates will be provided for the total population of counties, incorporated cities and metro areas, as well as the population of the nation, states, and counties by age, sex, race and Hispanic origin.
To view more detailed Montana data, visit CEIC's State Population Estimates web page at http://ceic.mt.gov/EstimatesStatePop.asp. If you need assistance accessing the data, contact CEIC staff at ceic@mt.gov or (406) 841-2740.

My Turn: This-n-That from the MEDA Office
As you know, MEDA has members scattered all over the state - not to mention Canada - thus, many of you have never visited the MEDA office. As a special New Year's Greeting, the webcam was set up and you can visit the office as if you were here in person. If you don't have time to visit, let me just say: "All the best to you in 2008 as we strive to make Montana the best she can be!"

MEDA Spring Conference....
The MEDA Spring Conference Committee (Rick Edwards, Brett Doney, Tracy McIntyre and Denise Smith) met via conference call to begin making plans for the next MEDA conference. The pending location is Chico Hot Springs with the date of February 25 - 26th all set. MEDA will not hold its conference in conjunction with IEDC training on May 5th and 6th (Billings) as work needs to be done on MEDA's legislative agenda prior to May. Be assured that your request for a more innovative and inspiring agenda was heard! The tentative theme for the conference: "Montana Small Towns: Big Success".
