CRDC and Program Funding Update:
The MEDA office is working to provide assistance to the MEDA Economic Development Program Finance Committee that has evaluated and is recommending continuation of current economic development programs. Data has been collected on each of the programs involved and was compiled into an abbreviated report. Edits have been completed and the document has been finalized and shared with the MEDA Membership. A second one-to-two page document will also be compiled.

Regarding CRDC's, a survey, compiled by Quinn Ness and Fran Viereck, was emailed to MEDA Members and all CRDC entities requesting feedback on the potential of Treasure Communities.

MEDA Membership Update: MEDA added four new members in February, including Blayr Barnard, Southeastern Montana Development Corp., Joel Bertolino, Beartooth RC&D, Melissa Hannah, Beaverhead Development Corp., and Julie Korkow, Southeastern Montana Development Corp. Urban Renewal "Tools Available" Workshop will be held at the Havre Great Northern Motor Inn, March 26, 2008, starting promptly at 10:00 a.m. and ending by 5:00 p.m. Jerry Grebenc, Manager – Community Technical Assistance Program, Montana Department of Commerce is scheduled to join us. He is the State’s expert on Growth Management Policy requirements so bring your questions, planners and any one else who will be working on the Browning and Poplar Growth Policy Plans – a prerequisite to adoption of an Urban Renewal Plan and Project. Randy Hanson, Montana Department of Commerce Regional Development Officer (RDO) for North Central Montana will also join us, and Tod Kasten, RDO for Eastern Montana has been invited as well, but travel costs may be prohibitive.
        A Bonus! John (Jody) Kertzmann, Co-Director of the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) Institute at Northwestern University (Chicago, IL) and author of “Building Communities from the Inside Out: A Path Toward Finding and Mobilizing a Community’s Assets,” will be giving a Lecture, March 26, 2008, at 7:00 p.m., Montana State University – Northern’s Hensler Auditorium. The evening lecture is free of charge, co-sponsored by Hopa Mountain, Montana State University’s Horizons program, MSU Leadership Institute, ASMSU, and Opportunity Link. MONTANA Report: Learn what is new in your region with the statewide Montana BEAR Program. Please review the progress of the statewide Montana BEAR program by reading the monthly report. If you haven't seen it by now, do review the 2008 BEAR Roundup Summary which is also available on the website. The next conference call for the MEDA BEAR Working Group is set for March 10th at 10:00am.

According to data entered into the ExecutivePulse software, 20 business visits were conducted around the state in February: Yellowstone County - 10 Park County - 3 Ravalli County - 3 Flathead County - 1 Lincoln County - 1 Cascade County - 2. Kathy Moody, of Big Sky EDA, led the way for the Outreach Specialists with 4 visits this month, Adele House - 3, Melissa Kramer - 3 and Susan Hanken - 2.

My Turn: This-n-That from the MEDA Office
The MEDA Spring Conference has come and gone (yet the snow remains) but I want to thank each and every one of you for your participation in the conference. One of my favorite things to do after a conference is to review the evaluation sheets and share your comments with the MEDA Board. I hope you know that your thoughts, comments and suggestions are taken seriously. One thing that became very obvious to me as the conference wound down: we have a lot of work to do in the year ahead. Together - we can make a huge difference in the economic development realm of Montana.
